This educational video is designed for architects, builders, and construction professionals seeking practical guidance on achieving airtightness in Australian constructed homes using the WRB (Weather Resistant Barrier). Using a vapour permeable layer, we demonstrate how to optimize existing timber framed detailing to achieve an exceptional level of air barrier continuity, even under challenging conditions like high winds. Our step-by-step approach highlights how conventional Australian construction methods can be adapted to meet modern standards for airtightness, energy efficiency, and indoor comfort. Discover how tightHOUSE is redefining construction practices with innovative methods for achieving airtight, high-performing builds, specifically tailored for cold temperate climates. This video showcases the installation of the Proctor vapour permeable wrap using tightHOUSE’s exclusive products: tightPLATE and tightBRIDGE, seamlessly integrated with Proctor Connect for advanced performance. In addition to showcasing these cutting-edge solutions, we explore how conventional Australian construction techniques can be adapted to meet the future needs of building efficiency and sustainability in cold temperature climates. From practical, cost-effective window details to insulation essentials, every step is thoughtfully demonstrated to enhance the energy efficiency and comfort of modern homes. Highlights include:

– Intro: Overview of tightHOUSE’s approach to high-performing builds.

– Current practices: Understanding conventional methods as a foundation for improvement.

– External wall wrap installation: The detailed airtight installation process with vapour-permeable wraps.

– Insulation essentials: Preparing for optimal thermal performance before wrapping walls.

– Economy and passive window details: An in-depth look at smart adaptations for affordable and passive solutions.

– Double-taping recap: A comprehensive review of techniques for securing the wrap efficiently.

– Proctor Connect and tightBRIDGE integration: Achieving seamless connections for airtight performance.

– Preparing wall wraps: Setting up for installation with precision.

– Connecting wraps to tightPLATE: Ensuring robust foundations for airtight builds.

– Double-story home junctions: Adapting wraps for multi-level homes with ease.

– Suspended ceiling services: Leveraging smartVAP ceilings and creating service cavities for electrical and centralised heat recovery systems.

This video serves as both an educational resource and a practical guide, demonstrating the flexibility of conventional construction methods when paired with innovative products and techniques. Join us as we envision the future of building—where energy efficiency, airtight construction, and cold climate adaptability become the new standard. By emphasizing external barrier consistency and providing additional tips for internal plaster air sealing, we ensure water vapour from human activity is minimized. We also explore the importance of incorporating a Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) or Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system to maintain low humidity levels inside conditioned spaces, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable living environment. Join us to learn how these techniques not only enhance construction quality but also pave the way for more resilient and energy-efficient homes of the future. Disclaimer: We do not recommend this detailing to be employed for non vapour permeable wraps in cold temperature climates.

If a building does NOT have insulation, using a standard off-the-shelf white paint (White 16) or a solar reflective paint CAN improve comfort within a building during a hot summer day but not in cold winter climates (Solar Reflective Coatings “MAY” slightly outperform standard white paint, BUT in this video, it was not the case). White paint helps drastically in dealing with heat from the sun; ceramic Solar Reflective paints do NOT add a measurable difference to the performance of your building. If your building has no insulation, consider using conventional insulation.

If there is insulation, consider the below retrofits:

Repairing sarking/foil that is torn and ripped under a tin roof with foil tape.

Fix up gaps in the insulation on your ceiling.

Paint your roof with an external white or light-coloured roof.

Understand that real energy-efficiency performance is achieved by improving airtightness and ensuring that insulation is abutted consistently to this air barrier throughout the building envelope.

A solar reflective coating does NOT meaningfully improve energy efficiency for cooling over a standard white (white 16) coloured paint if your ceiling is consistently insulated and airtight. Even if the ceiling isn’t consistently insulated, solar reflective paint does NOT lower the roof area temperature enough to make a quantifiable difference of a standard white paint. Some of these Ceramic Solar Thermal Radiant Coating products may offer better durability and longevity than standard white paint, which may add significant value to an asset. Ensure the supplier provides evidence of this.

Episode 6 – A video that covers the As-Built Verification Process for the 7 Star Homes Program with Sustainability Victoria.

It is important to install insulation and plaster correctly around building services. This ensures the building insulation and Air Barrier perform as they were designed to. Some key areas that are covered in this video are: Ducted heating return air tightness, subfloor air tightness in between ground and 1st floor of a double-story home. How do you maintain air-tightness and insulation integrity around services that penetrate plaster? (covers caulking plumbing and electrical services penetrations through plaster, joinery services, manholes and weather stripping, door and window. How do you insulate attic hatches? (rigid foam board and high-quality Air barrier tape)

Energy-efficient homes can provide homeowners with:

better quality homes that are naturally more comfortable in winter and summer.

A more healthy environment to live in.

significantly lower energy bills; and,

significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Homes can be tested to ensure it is built to meet the designed energy efficiency standard by using:

Blower door tests; this test uses fans to simulate wind blowing against the building’s exterior to identify air leakages in the building’s envelope.

Thermal imaging; this is used in conjunction with the blower door testing to locate missing or poorly installed insulation that may result in the movement of warm or cool air in and out of the building.

Independently testing and inspecting each home confirms compliance to the designed quality of energy efficiency inclusions.

Video 5 – Welcome to this interesting YouTube video showcasing a near passive house, boasting an impressive ACH@50Pa score of 1.3! This home which was apart of Sustainability Victoria’s 7 Star home program kicks off with an extensive interior tour of the property which is designed with a unique approach to air-tightness. Rather than using common construction wraps, this house is sealed with plasterboard(drywall), an innovation that has left many viewers fascinated. Due to the temperate location this home was built in a vapour retarding barrier was not necessary for managing moisture. This video shares insights into the challenges and benefits of using plasterboard(drywall) as the air barrier, explaining how meticulous work and paying attention to details resulted in a seamless level of air-tightness.

Episode 4 – Double-storey homes present unique challenges concerning the continuity of air and thermal barriers, specifically between floors. This intervening floor hampers a home’s energy efficiency for two main reasons. Firstly, an air barrier is a material designed to control airflow between conditioned and unconditioned spaces. It greatly reduces energy consumption and improves comfort. However, in a double-story home, the floor between two levels often acts as a discontinuity in the air barrier. This can lead to unconditioned air being drawn up into the conditioned spaces of the home, or heated or cooled air being lost to unconditioned spaces, reducing the overall effectiveness of the heating or cooling systems. Secondly, the thermal barrier is critical for reducing the rate of heat transfer. However, the under-insulated or uninsulated flooring often found between floors of double-storey houses forms a thermal bridge, which can accelerate heat loss or gain. This results in inconsistent temperatures from one floor to another and wastes energy, which is not ideal when considering energy efficiency. Careful attention to comprehensive design and meticulous execution during construction can help minimize these issues, but it remains a pertinent concern in double-story homes.

Draught stopper, are not all equal, when it comes to retrofit.

To buy our Draught Stopper. Click here.

Exhaust draft stoppers, also known as vent draft stoppers, are devices used to prevent cold air from entering through the exhaust duct of a home’s heating or cooling system. Their effectiveness depends on the specific design of the draft stopper and the exhaust system that is installed in your home. Some exhaust fans cannot move sufficient air when they are restricted with air flow from a closed door.

If properly installed, an exhaust draft stopper can prevent drafts and improve energy efficiency by keeping cold air out of the duct system. This can lead to lower energy bills and reduce the workload for the heating or cooling system.

However, it is important to note that exhaust draft stoppers may need to be removed periodically for cleaning and maintenance to ensure the system is working efficiently. Also, some models may require careful installation to prevent damage or improper sealing, which could lead to leaks or even damage to the heating or cooling system.

Overall, exhaust draft stoppers can be an effective solution for reducing drafts and improving energy efficiency in homes. As with any product, it is best to research and choose a reliable and high-quality draft stopper that is compatible with your specific heating or cooling system.
The post Draft Stopper Performance Testing appeared first on ecoEVO design.
